Out with the Old, In with the Purple: Upgrading Warehouse Connectivity

We recently finished a project for a warehouse client who was struggling with ageing Cat5 cabling. In a fast-paced warehouse environment, flaky data speeds aren’t just an annoyance; they’re a bottleneck for scanners, logistics systems, and overall productivity.

The Mission: A Cat6 Overhaul

Our goal was simple but significant: rip out the old, unreliable Cat5 and replace it with high-performance Cat6 LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) cabling. Choosing LSZH is a no-brainer for these environments—it’s safer, more durable, and future-proofs the building’s infrastructure for years to come.

The Process

Upgrading a warehouse isn’t like wiring a small office. We had to navigate structural beams, existing trunking, and high ceilings to ensure the new “purple rain” of Cat6 reached every corner of the facility.

Using the DeWalt multi-tool to create clean access points allowed us to drop the new looms exactly where they needed to be without compromising the structure.

The Nerve Centre

The most critical part of any install is the cabinet. We took that “birds’ nest” of old wiring and replaced it with structured, labelled, and properly dressed looms. It’s not just about looks—it makes troubleshooting ten times faster when you can actually see where every cable goes.

By moving to Cat6, the client now enjoys:

• Faster Data Speeds: Supporting up to 10Gbps over shorter distances.
• Reduced Interference: Better insulation means less crosstalk, which is vital in noisy industrial environments.
• Better Safety: The LSZH jacket ensures that in the event of a fire, toxic fumes are kept to an absolute minimum.
