Fibre Termination & Temporary Labelling in Southampton

This week, our engineering team have been busy down in Southampton, working inside a massive warehouse that’s getting a full IT upgrade. We thought we’d give you a little peek behind the scenes of what’s involved in terminating fibre and keeping everything labelled and organised—especially on a site this size!

Spaghetti? Not on Our Watch

First up, check out those fibre patch panels! In the pics, you’ll see the team prepping and terminating runs of OM4 fibre (yep, that’s the magenta cable), carefully dressed into the panels. Anyone who’s ever done fibre work knows how satisfying it is to get those loops neat and tidy—bonus points if your OCD kicks in every time you spot a cable out of place.

Why All the Labels?

On big installs like this, it’s all about futureproofing and saving time down the line. That’s why you’ll see temporary labels everywhere in the photos—numbered tags and big, clear signs marking everything from patch panels to individual fibre links (“Cabinet A”, “B”, and “C” for anyone doing a treasure hunt later). Once everything is tested and signed off, we’ll replace these with permanent labels so there’s zero guesswork for future engineers or anyone doing moves/adds/changes.

Fibre Termination 101

You can spot a couple of shots showing the guts of a fibre panel, mid-termination:
– Magenta OM4 fibres dressed in, prepped for splicing/connectorisation
– Breakout pigtails routed and tied in for a stress-free install
– Neatly laid out with everything traceable, labelled, and ready for testing

(And yes, those little baggies and tools in the background? Standard issue for anyone spending a day on the tools!)

Patch Panels & Network Ready

We don’t just stop at fibre. The rack is filling up with CAT6a patch panels, all individually numbered and ready for the copper runs that’ll power everything from Wi-Fi APs to office PCs. That mix of high-performance fibre and CAT6a copper means this warehouse will be ready for whatever the client throws at it, now and in the future.

Keeping It Real

Every jobsite has its own little quirks, and Southampton is no exception. But by keeping our cabling tidy and our labels clear (even the temporary ones!), we make sure that anyone stepping into the comms room can find what they need, fast.
