Keeping Clients Connected: Installing a Balcony Starlink Backup Connection
In the world of Managed IT Services (MSP), one rule stands above almost everything else: downtime is not an option.
Whether it’s cloud infrastructure, VoIP systems, or day-to-day office operations, modern businesses completely depend on stable internet. Traditional leased lines and primary fibre connections are fantastic—right until a road crew clips a street cabinet or an exchange suffers an unexpected outage.
That’s why true network resilience requires diverse routing. Not just a secondary copper or fibre line running down the exact same trench in the pavement, but a completely independent, out-of-band path.
Enter Starlink.
The Mission: Bulletproof Redundancy
We recently took on an installation project to set up a dedicated Starlink backup circuit. When configuring secondary connections, our goal is always dual:
- Uninterrupted Line of Sight: Satellites need a clear, unobstructed view of the sky to deliver reliable low-latency throughput.
- Clean, Protected Cabling: An external cable run exposed to British weather, UV light, and physical foot traffic has to be built to last. A messy install isn’t just an eyesore—it’s an operational liability.
Making the Run: Precision Trunking & Balcony Routing
Working high up on external access balconies and fire escapes always tests your problem-solving skills. Standard indoor containment won’t cut it, and you can’t just drape loose exterior Cat6 over railings and call it a day.
Here’s how we tackled it on-site:
- Slick Perimeter Trunking: Around external doorway lintels and glass panel frames, we routed dedicated white external mini-trunking. By contouring tight 90-degree turns flush against the structural frame and door reveal, the cable run blends into the building envelope rather than standing out.

- Heavy-Duty Railing Fixings: Moving along the metal gantry and balustrades, we kept the cable tucked securely along structural uprights and the underside of the walkway grates. Using UV-stabilised, weather-resistant ties ensures the cable won’t shift, pinch, or degrade under foot traffic or high winds.

- Weatherproof Ingress: All entry points into the core server room/comm patch environment were properly sealed to ensure zero moisture ingress, maintaining the building’s thermal and weather integrity.
Why Starlink for MSP Resilience?
For high-demand operations, pairing high-speed fibre with low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet provides the ultimate peace of mind:
- Zero Terrestrial Single Points of Failure: If the local street infrastructure goes dark, the satellite link doesn’t flinch.
- Automatic SD-WAN Failover: Configured with intelligent firewalls and SD-WAN routing, traffic shifts seamlessly to the Starlink backup the millisecond the primary line drops—often without users even noticing a dropped call.
- Rapid Deployment & Flexibility: Rooftops, balconies, and exterior gantries can all be leveraged to build robust connectivity without waiting months for civil roadworks.
The Verdict
A tidy, secure run, solid line-of-sight positioning, and a rock-solid failover path ready to catch the network whenever needed. Another site secured, tested, and ready for whatever the grid throws at it!
