Case Study: Keeping a Yorkshire Day Nursery Connected

It’s been a busy week at Fathom IT! We recently took a trip over the Pennines to a fantastic day nursery in Yorkshire to give their network infrastructure a much-needed overhaul.

In a modern nursery, connectivity isn’t just about checking emails. It’s about safety, digital learning journals, and ensuring staff can communicate instantly from anywhere in the building. Here is a quick look at what we installed.

The Engine Room: Aruba Instant On

First things first, we upgraded the backbone of their network. As you can see in the rack photo below, it’s a busy but tidy cabinet.

We deployed an Aruba Instant On 1930 Switch (the silver unit with the green lights). For those not in the know, this is a brilliant piece of kit for small to medium businesses. It handles Power over Ethernet (PoE), meaning it sends power directly through the network cables to the devices on the ceiling—saving us from having to install messy power sockets everywhere.

It’s sitting nicely above their existing DrayTek router, keeping all the data traffic flowing smoothly.

Wireless That Actually Works

Dead zones are a nightmare in a sprawling building like a nursery. To fix this, we installed Aruba Instant On Access Points (the white square devices you see mounted on the ceilings).

We mounted these high up for two reasons:

  1. Coverage: It gives the best signal spread for staff using tablets to update daily logs.
  2. Safety: Keeps the kit well out of reach of curious little hands!

Crystal Clear Communication

We also needed to ensure their telephone system was up to scratch. In the hallway photo below, next to the white WiFi point, you’ll spot a small black box.

That black box is a Yealink DECT Base Station.

This controls the cordless phones throughout the nursery. By mounting it centrally on the ceiling here in the corridor, we ensure the staff have rock-solid phone signal wherever they are—whether they are in the office, the play area, or the kitchen. No more dropped calls when parents ring in.

The Result?

A tidy, professional install that gives the nursery one less thing to worry about. The Wi-Fi is fast, the phones are clear, and the cabling is neat.

If your business network needs a bit of TLC or a full upgrade, give us a shout at Fathom IT.
